VO2max test
$179
Not Limited to the lab!
Because the VO2 Master Pro is fully portable, we're not limited to a lab. We can test you on the track, on the hills, in the pool, in the gym, or on the court, wherever your sport actually happens.
Who is this for?Endurance athletes who want a direct, accurate benchmark to train against and track over time. Anyone who takes their longevity seriously and wants to know exactly where they stand, and what to do about it. Anyone whose GP has flagged a cardiovascular or metabolic concern and wants objective data to act on.
Want more than a number? Step up to the VO2max and Lactate test or the INSCYD 360º Metabolic Profile for training thresholds and a fuller picture of how your body performs under load.
What is it?
VO2max is the maximum rate at which your body can consume and use oxygen during exercise. It is the gold standard measure of aerobic capacity, the ceiling of your endurance engine, and one of the strongest predictors we have of both athletic performance and long-term health.
For athletes, it tells you the upper limit of your aerobic system and benchmarks you against your sport and the wider population. For anyone focused on health and longevity, it matters just as much; a VO2max below the 20th percentile for your age and sex is associated with a significantly elevated risk of death from all causes, comparable in size to established risk factors like smoking or heart disease.
Knowing your number is the first step to doing something about it.
How we test
You'll be tested on the VO2 Master Pro, a breath-by-breath analyser that measures your oxygen use directly and in real time, not an estimate derived from heart rate or a submaximal formula.
We use a ramp protocol, increasing intensity in stages until you reach your true maximum. This gets you to your genuine aerobic ceiling before muscle fatigue can end the test early, so the number you walk away with reflects your engine, not your legs giving out first.
Testing is available on the Wattbike Proton for cycling, the Impulse RT700 treadmill for running, or the Concept2 RowErg for rowing; if you'd rather test on your own bike, we can also set you up on a Wahoo Kickr Core. Tell us your sport and setup when you book and we'll have the right rig ready.
What the results tell you
Your VO2max in mL/kg/min, benchmarked against population norms for your age and sex
Your maximum heart rate, recorded during the test
Personalised training zones for heart rate and pace or power, built from your own data rather than a generic chart
And a results debrief where we explain what your numbers mean and exactly what to do with them.
How Should I prepare? To ensure we capture completely accurate baseline data, you need to arrive fresh:
Treat the 48 hours before your test as a recovery window (avoid grueling intervals, heavy lifting, or exhausting endurance sessions).
Avoid food, caffeine, or intense stimulants for 2–3 hours before your slot.
Stay well-hydrated in the lead-up to your test.
All prices NZD inclusive of GST.
How long does this take? Please allow 60 minutes for your total booking. This covers your setup, protocol briefing, warm-up, the sport-specific step-test itself, and a brief initial cool-down chat before we process your data.
